OVERVIEW
The Jefferson County Engineer administers the County Highway Department, which constructs and maintains 194 Miles of county highways and 44 bridges in Jefferson County. The County Engineer assures the delivery of transportation related services in accordance with the County Board and state statutes. The department provides assistance and advice to 16 highway commissioners which control 907 miles of roadway and 160 bridges.
The highway department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all county highways including:

mowing right-of-way

pavement repair, including pothole patching and crack sealing

snow removal
-
drainage improvement and maintenance
-
inspection and repair of bridges

sign installation
-
paint striping
-
establishing and posting speed limits
Additional services provided by the department:

Obtains state and federal funds for county and township highways and bridges and administers the motor fuel tax fund for the townships.

Approves permits for utilities on County right of way

Approves overload, oversize permits for County highways

Surveys, prepares plans, specifications, cost estimates, agreements, and other necessary documents for county and township road and bridge projects

Inspects all construction for road and bridge projects to ensure the proper execution of contracts and assure quality workmanship.
